Dental Erosion: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment | Dr. AL Dental Clinic

Dental erosion is the irreversible, non-bacterial loss of tooth enamel caused by exposure to dietary or stomach acids, leading to sensitivity, pain, and yellowing. Common causes include acidic foods/drinks (soda, citrus, wine) and conditions like GERD. Key, preventable symptoms include cupping on teeth, transparency, and sensitivity.

Causes of Acid Erosion

Extrinsic (Dietary) Acids: Frequent consumption of soft drinks, fruit juices, citrus fruits, sports drinks, and wine.

Intrinsic (Stomach) Acids: Chronic vomiting, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and acid reflux.

Other Factors:Dry mouth (low saliva), certain medications, and environmental factors.

Symptoms of Dental Erosion

Sensitivity: Increased sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods.

Appearance Changes: Teeth appear yellow (exposed dentin), transparent, or shiny.

Structural Damage: Cupping (small dents) on the biting surfaces, rounded teeth, or chipped, brittle edges.

Prevention and Management

Dietary Changes:Limit acidic drinks and snacks; use a straw to minimize contact.

Oral Hygiene: Wait at least 30–60 minutes to brush after consuming acids to avoid damaging softened enamel.

Fluoride Use: Use fluoride toothpaste to help strengthen remaining enamel.

Treatment: Depending on severity, dentists may treat with bonding, veneers, or crowns.
